    Before his life of freedom at the Elephant Conservation Centre in Laos, Dor Khoun Meuang was one of a group of elephants that were in the process of being illegally sent to a Middle Eastern Zoo from Laos in 2016. With 12 other elephants, he had been loaded into a shipping container, ready for transportation.

    Ginting is a beautiful Sumatran elephant living in a herd of over 20 elephants in the Bukit Tigapuluh ecosystem. At over 30 years of age, she had her male calf Chrisna with her when she was first collared in January 2014. Chrisna was only a few weeks old at the time but the baby bull has developed into a buffalo-sized healthy youngster, always up for trouble and play!

    Mae Mah was forced to work in a logging camp for many years. She was then selected as one of twelve elephants to be illegally sent to a Middle Eastern Zoo from Laos in 2016. Mae Mah and twelve other elephants had been loaded into shipping containers and the plane waiting for them was on the tarmac at Vientiane International Airport in Laos when the Laos Government stepped in. An executive order was received from the Prime Minister’s office, stating that the sale was illegal under Lao law for the first time in history and the elephants were blocked from entering the airport.
