Anna's herd grazing

One of the most exciting observations has been watching Anna's group herd forces with the Ginting and Indah herds, forming a spectacular gathering of around 35 to 40 elephants moving together through the forest. These mergers are a highlight for the field team, offering a glimpse into the rich social lives of elephants and the deep bonds that connect these groups across the landscape.

Particularly heartening this period has been the confirmed presence of calves within the herd. New life in a landscape that faces very real pressures is always cause for celebration, and it speaks to the stability and resilience of Anna's group that reproductive activity continues. The herd structure remains cohesive and strong, even as the group occasionally splits temporarily into smaller subgroups during foraging - a natural and flexible behaviour that reflects their adaptability.

Anna's herd continues to rely on the Sumay River system, Sungai Kuning, Mendelang, and ex-mining areas near Semambu as key movement corridors and foraging grounds. These areas provide the water, regenerating vegetation, and relative calm that the herd needs to thrive. They also form part of the historical movement pathways connecting Sekutur Jaya and the Sumay area - ancient elephant routes that are becoming increasingly pressured by landscape fragmentation. The field team continues to monitor the herd's movements closely, working to ensure these vital corridors remain accessible.

Anna's story is one of strength, adaptability, and the enduring power of elephant social bonds - and it continues to unfold across the forests and riverbanks of Bukit Tigapuluh every day.
