Over the past few months, Dor Khoun Meuang has continued to thrive, and there have been some exciting developments in his behaviour.
One of the most encouraging signs has been his growing independence. Dor Khoun Meuang has been consistently ranging several kilometres away from the rest of the herd, and his movements now cover a remarkably wide area - with his furthest recorded range extending close to the Thai border. For a young male of his age, this shift toward solitary exploration is entirely natural and represents a huge step forward in his rewilding journey. Males in the wild gradually establish their own ranges and movement patterns as they mature and watching Dor Khoun Meuang do exactly that is deeply rewarding for the whole team.
We are also thrilled to share that Dor Khoun Meuang has begun displaying breeding behaviours, attempting to mount other females in the herd. While no successful mating has occurred yet, this is a wonderfully positive development. In captivity, many male elephants never develop these behaviours at all, largely due to years of social isolation and limited interaction with other elephants. The fact that Dor Khoun Meuang is learning and practising these skills naturally - through real social experience, speaks volumes about the quality of life he now enjoys in the wild. These are learned behaviours, and he is learning them exactly as nature intended.
To support ongoing monitoring, Dor Khoun Meuang has recently been fitted with an upgraded GPS collar. This new collar allows the team to track his movements in much greater detail, helping to better understand his habitat preferences, how far he travels, and how long he spends in different areas.

We are also pleased to report that there have been no incidents of human - elephant conflict during this period. No property damage, no village complaints, and no elephants approaching settlements - a quiet but important measure of how well the program is working.
